DNAWORKS and the Manhattan JCC present the HaMapah/המפה World Premiere

In Hebrew, HaMapah/המפה means “the tablecloth” or “the map." HaMapah/המפה weaves contemporary dance with archival material, personal interviews, Yiddish and American songs, and video set to traditional, contemporary, and classical music. In HaMapah/המפה, McKinney explores issues of culture, self-hood, and community.

In exploring his African, Jewish, and Native American heritages, McKinney dances the personal and the collective, the local and the global, and the present and the past. HaMapah/המפה invites audiences to consider and envision the possibility of a global Jewish identity.

As part of the program, immediately following the performance, DNAWORKS Co-Directors McKinney and Banks will lead a community dialogue with the audience about the core ideas of the piece.

DNAWORKSHOP

The first DNAWORKSHOP was a success! On February 28, a young diverse group of artists - dancers, visual artists, writers, directors, educators and performers participated in creative exercises, discussed their projects and needs, and shared the joys and frustrations of working as artists/activists. From this first meeting, shared interests and partnerships have already begun to emerge, and a common repertory of creative tools and exercises is beginning to grow under Daniel and Adam's leadership. To view video from the first DNAWORKSHOP, please visit our Youtube page.

The next DNAWORKSHOP is scheduled for Sunday March 28th from 2-5pm. For updates, RSVP, and more information, please contact: info@dnaworks.org
